Oh Sony I love you so but why must I leave you on the dance floor. It seems to get the right light; in low light circumstance with my Sony alpha cameras is not an easy task. The one constant reliable option on my canon speed lights is the use of the red IR assist. This is not an on camera flash option with Sony Speedlight’s on the alpha system. I hope this is soon to change and Sony hears the cries from event shooters in need of reliable run and gun focus in dark situations. Sony with their last firmware update did enabled the LED on the Sony HVL-F45RM External Flash to assist in focus. I think it is the only Sony flash with this option. However, with that is a bright distracting led flash of light to obtain focus. The red IR beam from other dslr systems is faster and a lot less distracting. The HVL-F45RM is a great flash on the alpha systems. It is not too big; it is powerful for its size and has HSS. There are lots of off camera flash options, like the Nissin air command, that will use an IR assist beam… but in using the Nissin to get IR assist you must use the air command remote and have the flash off camera. I am so close to ditching all my other systems but until a reliable focus system is incorporated into the Sony flash/alpha eco system is released I think I have to continue to have multiple dance partners.
